What an ironic thing is the mind of the man.  Depression over his inability to do what is required of him creates the perfect state in which he can write.  The permanent writer's block that so plagued him is lifted, if at the expense of his mental wellbeing.  Ah, but is it only his self-loathing that leads him to depression?  No.  It is also his feelings of frustration.
